AANI: Thank You Very Much
" It is time to say thank you to many individuals, groups, and institutions that have been offering us their support. First, I would like to thank two of my professors, Prof. Kurisu and Prof. Uozumi, for their continual support in the development of our service. Their strong leadership, excellent teaching, and good intention are reflected in our work output. Our special thanks also goes to Dr. Kazunori Arita who has been sharing his knowledge and skill with us since the beginning of this program. He is a great friend to our country and we think of him very fondly.

I would also like to thank Prof. Tomokatsu Hori from Tokyo Women’s Medical University for his guidance in epilepsy surgery as well as Dr. Taira, from the same institution, for his support in establishing functional surgery.

We are thankful to Prof. Tetsuo Kanno and his team from Fujita University for their technical support and for helping us to conduct the 1st Nepal-Japan Neurosurgical Conference in 1998. The 2nd NJNC is being planned on Sept. 22-23 2006 in Pokhara. We are thankful to Japan Brain Foundation and Prof. Fukui for providing us with the Stereotactic frame. We are thankful to Prof. Kawase and Dr. Uchida from Keio University for their support in basic neurosurgery set and drill system.

We are thankful to Dr. Hideyuki Ohnishi for his technical help and his never-ending encouragement. We are thankful to Prof. Helmut Bertalanffy and Dr. Michael Beckert, both from Germany, for their academic input and technical support. Dr. Chie Mihara, Dr. Sumida, Dr. Ohba, Dr. Eguchi, and Dr. Okazaki from Hiroshima University have visited our institute to share their knowledge. Dr. Bara Bensch-Schreiter and Dr. Bettina Schreiter have assisted us in the establishment of ICU. German Nepal Help have supported us on different occasions with surgical equipment.

Dr. K Turel and Dr. Atul Goel from Mumbai have visited and given us valuable guidance. Dr. Daniel Spitzer from New York and Dr. Oota from Hiroshima have recently visited our department and have encouraged us to continue with our work.

We would also like to thank the Neuroscience Forum, TUTH for supporting our ideas and helping us in the academic field. We will continue to work in collaboration with this organization in the future as well.

Last but not least, my thanks goes to the Phect board, the KMH administration, the director, the chief of services, the resident doctors, the nurses, the anesthesiologists, and the paramedical staff for their enormous support, without which we could not have come very far. The input of Mr. Rakesh Shrestha, our department secretary, has been instrumental in maintaining order for our work.

The team would also like to thank all the patients who showed faith in us and gave us the opportunity to relieve their pain and discomfort. Without their belief, we would never have arrived where we stand today.

All of this would not have been possible without the support of my family, who have been by my side through the difficult times. Their love and encouragement have played a vital, if unseen, role in the development of the department.

If allowed to summarize our eight years in Nepal, it has been a period of struggle and hard work—of falling and rising. The team has overcome our learning curve and we have established the majority of services. Now it is time to increase and share the fruit we have been able to create with as many people as possible. For this more neurosurgeons are needed so more patients can be helped.

To establish and expand neurosurgery service in a developing country like Nepal is not an easy task and I would greatly appreciate your ideas, guidance, and support in this regard. "
